The Trading City

The City of London began as a trading settlement and today is one of the world's leading commercial cities. This walk is the story of how the City has adapted itself over the centuries to compete on a global scale.

Our walk starts at Monument station and finishes at Aldgate station.

On our walk you will:

  • See the river Thames and hear of its importance to the City
  • Hear the story of German traders and the site they owned for 700 years
  • Discover why those who shared a common trade or skill needed to band together
  • Visit the site that Elizabeth 1st gave a royal title
  • See two 19th century foreign born men commemorated in sculpture
  • Visit the site of one of the City's most exciting 20th century buildings
