News and Print in the City
Printing came to the City of London at the beginning of the 16th century By the end of the 19th century Fleet Street, in the west of the City, was the centre of Britain's newspaper industry. 100 years later Reuters news agency followed other industry giants and left Fleet Street.
This walk takes you on an exploration of City sights and locations key to the print industry. Our walk starts and finishes besides St Paul's tube station.
On our walk you will:
- See where the Worshipful Company of Stationers and Newspaper Makers have their hall
- Hear about the first printing machine in the City and see where it was sited
- Discover where Britain's first daily paper was based
- Wander through courtyards and alleys to see where printers set up their offices
- Visit those sites where some of Britain's best known tabloid and broadsheet journals were located
- Pause at the printer's church
- Hear about some of the movers and shakers in the print industry
